records and competitions

when i married leah, i had no idea how competitive she would be. During our short dating period, it was like we had to encourage her to be competitive. well, now she's officially a 'Costine'. She keeps track of our records in playing cards, mini-golf, air hockey (which we played once with her winning, so its obvious she'd keep track of that one).

she gets talking about things she used to do growing up like throwing a rock in the ocean and trying to find it again and she says, 'my record is 27!' or something like that. come on! who keeps track of stuff like that?! and then she knew her record for skipping rocks, sneezing, and other odd 'accomplishments'.

so in our recording of our activities, i'm kicking butt at rumey, cribbage, bowling, and winning by one in mini-golf. i was up by something like 7 shots half way through and then she kept chipping away at it and then hit it off a little cliff, it bounced off two walls and went in the hole. Naturally, i got something like a double bogey on it and she was winning. Then, during summer camp we went to a neutral site and i wupped up on her. i beat her by something like 13 strokes. and that was with everyone having to pick up at 5 strokes, something she had to do many times.

she takes pleasure in teaching me card games like 'spite and malice' and then keeping score while i'm trying to learn. but i will soon reclaim my dominance in cards by beating her in her own game.

oh, and its 1-0 on easter egg hunts, too.

yes, leah has read this and she'd like to add that she beat me at checkers and the 'running-as-close-to-the-wave-and-then-running-away-from-it' game. what i didn't make clear is that i'm killing her in everything else. we played cards one evening and we played two games of cribbage and 4 games or so of Rumey and she didn't win once. then she decided to teach me this game she knows and I haven't been able to dominate her at that yet.

Just be careful, Tim. I used to like to play cribbage with Dad, until I taught him some strategy and he started winning all the time! And I also lost interest in chess when I got beat regularly. (I never could memorize stategy in chess.) On the other hand, Dad never did learn to play Bridge well. He didn't play cards growing up and didn't understand about paying attention to which cards have been played and which are still unused. No one ever wanted him as a Bridge partner... So, don't get TOO competitive or you'll lose your playmate!
